What the Pocket Hero is

The Pocket Hero is a small, handheld microchip scanner from Microchip ID Systems. It fits in the palm of your hand, yet its bright viewing window displays the entire chip number on one line, which makes the number easy to read and copy correctly. It runs on a rechargeable battery charged with the included USB cable, and comes with a protective microfiber carrying pouch and a test chip fob so you can confirm the scanner is working.

It is an ISO-only reader. It reads 15-digit ISO microchips from any company or country, and Microchip ID Systems states plainly that it does not read non-ISO chips, including 9- and 10-digit chips.

Who the Pocket Hero is for

  • Breeders who microchip litters and want to confirm each chip reads and record the number before puppies or kittens go home.
  • Rescues, shelters and foster homes checking incoming animals for an ISO chip.
  • Kennels, groomers and boarding facilities that want to verify an animal's identity on check-in.
  • Horse owners and barns using ISO microchips. Microchip ID Systems also offers the Pocket Hero through its equine division.

If you need to read older non-ISO chips as well, the Pocket Hero is not the right tool. Call us at 800-979-2869 and we can help you compare it with the Hero Advanced Microchip Reader.

How ISO microchip numbers work

An ISO microchip number is always 15 digits, and the Pocket Hero is built to read only that standard. Because it shows the whole number on one line, you can check all 15 digits at a glance. If a scan returns nothing, the animal may have no chip or a non-ISO chip that this reader cannot see; ask your veterinarian to scan with a universal reader.

Using the test chip fob

The durable test chip fob lets you check the reader before you scan an animal. Microchip ID Systems gives two cautions:

  • Keep the test chip fob away from animals when scanning, so the reader does not pick up the fob instead of the animal's chip.
  • The test number is 933007125056789 or 933000000000000. If either number appears while you are scanning an animal, move the fob away and rescan the animal.

Charging, care and storage

  • Recharge with the supplied USB cable. A full charge takes 4 to 5 hours and lasts about 3,000 scans under normal conditions.
  • Check the battery level icon in the window, and let the auto turn-off save battery between scans.
  • Store the reader in its protective microfiber carrying pouch.
  • Keep out of reach of children and animals.
