Keto-Gel is a concentrated energy gel - calories in a form an animal will take when it will not take food.

The name points at what it is for. Ketosis is the state an animal goes into when it is burning its own body reserves because it is not eating enough, and it is a genuine risk in any animal under heavy demand: a bitch feeding a big litter, a puppy that has stopped competing at the teat, an animal off its food after illness or travel.

Where It Gets Used

The puppy that has gone quiet. Healthy neonates are noisy and competitive. One that has gone still and cool has usually stopped feeding some hours before you noticed, and has almost no reserve. Warmth first, calories next.

The bitch at the end of a large litter. She is producing milk for eight and will often not eat enough to cover it.

An animal that has come through a procedure and is not interested in food. Anaesthetic and pain both suppress appetite for a day or two.

After a bout of scour or sickness. "Scour" is diarrhoea - it empties an animal of both fluid and calories faster than anything else, and small animals have the least to spare.

An animal that will not eat because it is somewhere new. Stress from travel, a show, or a move takes appetite with it.

What It Is Not

An energy gel is a supplement, not a feed and not a treatment. A fading puppy needs warmth and a veterinary opinion as well as calories - this buys time, it does not fix the reason.
