Dormosedan Gel is an alternative route for delivery of the alpha-2 agonist detomidine in horses. The transmucosal or sublingual deposition allows for administration without injection. This could be advantageous in the needle-shy horse or for lay-people who are not comfortable administering injections to horses.
Directions | The dose is administered sublingually at 0.04 mg/kg (0.018 mg/lb). Gel must be placed beneath the tongue of the horse and is not meant to be swallowed. Transmucosal administration of drugs allows for absorption of drugs across the mucous membranes of the mouth. This is not oral administration, as it avoids degradation in the stomach and first-pass metabolism via the liver. Veterinarians should counsel owners that this drug can be absorbed across their own mucous membranes (eyes, mouth, and even skin) and should take precautions to this exposure. |
