Acetazolamide is a diuretic (water pill) used to treat elevated potassium levels in horses with HYPP (Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis), an inherited disease. Acetazolamide is also sometimes prescribed by veterinarians for the treatment of glaucoma in dogs and cats.
Uses
Acetazolamide is used sometimes for metabolic alkalosis or glaucoma in small animals and hyerkalemic periodic paralysis (HYPP) in horses.
Possible Side Effects
Please contact your veterinarian immediately if you notice any of the following reactions: gastrointestinal upset, central nervous system effects such as sleepiness, weakness, or excitement, blood effects such as low blood cell counts, kidney effects such as increased drinking, crystal formation, or urination problems, electrolyte effects, high blood sugar, liver effects, skin effects such as a rash, and allergic reactions.
Drug & Food Interactions
Talk to your veterinarian about any other drugs your pet is taking before starting this medication, including aspirin, cyclosporine, digoxin, insulin, methenamine compounds, and drugs affecting potassium.
Precautions
Acetazolamide should be used with caution in patients with severe respiratory acidosis or those with preexisting hematologic abnormalities. Decreased exercise capacity, hypercapnia, and respiratory acidosis may occur in healthy horses during exercise with chronic, high dose administration. Use of acetazolamide with antibacterial sulfonamides or furosemide may cause cross sensitivities.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs, cats & horses.
