Albuterol Sulfate Syrup 2mg/5ml

Albuterol is a bronchodilator prescribed by veterinarians primarily to treat bronchitis or other respiratory conditions in cats and horses. While constricted bronchi in dogs is rare, albuterol may be used to treat if present. May also be used for coughs in dogs, cats and horses.

Albuterol is used principally in cats and horses for its effects on bronchial smooth muscle to alleviate bronchospasm or cough. True bronochoconstriction is rare in dogs, but when present, albuterol may be useful.

Most adverse effects are dose-related and those that would be expected with sympathetic agents including increased heart rate, temors, CNS excitement, and dizziness.

The following drug interactions with albuterol (primarily when albuterol is given orally and not via inhalation) have either been reported or are theoretical or animals and may be of significance in veterinary patients: Beta-adrenergic blocking agents, digoxin, diuretics, inhaled anesthetics, other sympathomimetic amines, and tricyclic antidepressants.

Albuterol is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to it. It should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypertension, seizure disorders, or cardiac disease (especially with concurrent arrhythmias).

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
