A flea comb is a comb whose teeth are set close enough together to trap fleas and flea dirt as it passes through the coat.

It Is A Test Before It Is A Treatment

This is the part worth knowing, and it is why a flea comb belongs in a kennel rather than just a house.

An itchy animal has a long list of possible causes - fleas, mites, yeast, bacterial infection, food, allergy. They look similar from across a room and they need completely different answers. Before spending on a shampoo or a supplement, a flea comb settles one of them in two minutes.

What To Look For

Comb through, then tap what you collect onto a damp piece of white paper or a wet cotton pad.

Flea dirt is flea droppings, and it is digested blood. On something damp it dissolves and spreads out reddish-brown. Ordinary dirt does not - it stays as grit.

That test is decisive. Reddish smears mean fleas, whether or not you ever see one. Plenty of animals carry enough fleas to itch badly without a single one being visible, particularly on a dark or dense coat.

Where A Breeder Uses It

On any itchy animal, before buying anything.

On puppies too young for flea treatment. A comb is often the only thing you are allowed to use on a very young litter, and it physically removes what is there.

On a new arrival, before it goes anywhere near the rest.

On cats, which hide fleas well and object to being treated.

Around the tail base and the back of the neck. That is where fleas concentrate, and where the comb finds them first.

Fleas And Skin Go Together

Flea allergy is one of the most common causes of serious itching, and it does not take many fleas. A single bite on a sensitive animal causes days of scratching, which is why an animal can be genuinely flea- allergic with almost nothing visible on it.

When A Shampoo Is Not The Answer

Persistent itching, hair loss in patches, sores, a smell, or skin that keeps coming back after every wash is not a grooming problem. It is a veterinary one, and washing it repeatedly delays the answer.

Your attending veterinarian can see the animal and can test. Ask before you have worked through four bottles rather than after.
