What the Miracle Nipple is
The Miracle Nipple is a small, soft feeding nipple designed to mimic natural nursing for hand-reared baby mammals. Its maker calls it “the next best thing to Mom.” Instead of fitting a bottle, it is made to go on the tip of a syringe, so the person feeding controls how fast formula flows. The manufacturer says the newest Miracle Nipples arriving at retailers are softer, with a more natural feel.
The manufacturer recommends using the Miracle Oring Syringe instead of a bottle at first, and says most very small mammals should only be fed with the syringe on the nipple, not a bottle. Its reasoning: a syringe lets you control the flow of fluid, while a bottle does not, and without control the baby can aspirate formula into its lungs.
Choosing the right Miracle Nipple size
| Nipple | The manufacturer sizes it for |
| Mini (this page) | Very small animals such as mice, newborn squirrels and bunnies, chipmunks, red and flying squirrels. Also very desirable for kittens, especially flat-faced breeds such as Persians. |
| Original Miracle Nipple | Small animals such as baby squirrels, bunnies, toy breed puppies and opossums (opossums mainly lap their formula), and other babies of that size |
| Small Puppy and Large Puppy | Puppy nipples, packed with 10 mL or 20 mL syringes |
Not sure? The Original and Mini sample set has 1 Mini and 1 Original nipple with 1 mL and 3 mL syringes, and the Puppy sample set has 1 small and 1 large puppy nipple with 10 mL and 20 mL syringes.
How to feed with the Mini Miracle Nipple
From the manufacturer's directions:
- Wash the nipple in warm soapy water, rinse it well and let it dry.
- Attach the nipple to the 3 mL Miracle Oring Syringe. The manufacturer recommends starting with the smallest syringe size.
- Fill the syringe with the right amount of warmed formula or milk replacer, such as KMR kitten milk replacer for kittens or Esbilac puppy milk replacer for puppies. Follow the formula label for amounts.
- Hold the baby in a slightly upright, comfortable position with its head supported.
- Gently introduce the nipple and let the baby latch on. At first you may need to massage the baby's throat so it swallows, gets the taste and starts to suckle.
- Slowly depress the plunger. Watch the baby and adjust the flow. If the baby is suckling too hard and getting formula too fast, hold the plunger back.
- After each feeding, clean the nipple and syringe.
If a baby coughs, sputters or gets formula from its nose, stop and call your veterinarian. Hand-raising very young animals is demanding, and your veterinarian can help with feeding amounts and schedules.
Caring for the nipples and syringe
- Clean the nipples thoroughly with warm soapy water before each use and rinse off all soap.
- Do not let the nipples soak in soapy water for long. The manufacturer says soaking expands the rubber, and the nipple will not stay on the syringe as well.
- Dry the nipple well before the next feeding and store it in a clean, dry place.
- Inspect it for wear. If you see cracks or tears, replace the nipple immediately.
- Wash the syringe with warm soapy water, rinse well and air dry. Miracle Oring Syringes are BPA free, autoclavable and made in Denmark, and the maker says the O-ring lets them glide without the sticking of ordinary syringes over many feedings.
- The printed markings on the syringe are non-toxic ink and can wash off with repeated use. The manufacturer says many people cover them with clear tape or clear nail polish.

Frequently asked questions
What comes in the Mini Miracle Nipple pack?
Two Mini Miracle Nipples and one 3 mL Miracle Oring Syringe.
Is the Mini Miracle Nipple for kittens or puppies?
The manufacturer sizes the Mini for very small animals and says it is especially desirable for kittens, including flat-faced breeds such as Persians. Toy breed puppies are usually sized for the Original Miracle Nipple. Bigger puppies use the Small Puppy or Large Puppy nipple.
What is the difference between Mini and Original?
Size. The Mini is for the tiniest babies and many kittens. The Original Miracle Nipple is for slightly larger babies such as toy breed puppies, baby squirrels, bunnies and opossums.
Can I put the Miracle Nipple on a bottle?
The manufacturer has videos on putting Miracle Nipples on bottles, but it recommends using the Miracle Oring Syringe instead of a bottle at first, and says most very small mammals should only be fed with the syringe. A syringe lets you control the flow; a bottle does not.
Why use a syringe instead of a bottle?
Control. The manufacturer says a syringe lets you control the flow of formula, while with a bottle you have no control over the flow, and without control the baby risks aspirating formula.
What syringes fit the Mini Miracle Nipple?
Is the Miracle Nipple latex free?
Yes. The manufacturer says Miracle Nipples are latex free.
How do I clean the Miracle Nipple?
Wash in warm soapy water before each use, rinse thoroughly and dry well. Do not soak the nipple in soapy water for long, or the rubber can expand and the nipple will not stay on the syringe as well.
Can I boil or autoclave the nipples?
The manufacturer describes cleaning with warm soapy water, rinsing and drying. It says Miracle Oring Syringes are autoclavable. Follow the care instructions that come with the pack you receive.
What formula should I use?
Use a milk replacer labeled for the species you are feeding, such as KMR kitten milk replacer for kittens or Esbilac puppy milk replacer for puppies, and follow that product's mixing and feeding directions. Your veterinarian can advise on amounts and schedules.
Do you sell a Mini and Original sample set?
