Why breeders use it on young litters

The label schedule starts at 2 weeks of age, and the liquid is easy to measure for small puppies by body weight. It does not cover whipworms or tapeworms, so pair it with a fecal exam rather than assuming.

The A to Z Take: What Is Commonly Done in the Industry

Veterinary parasite guidance, including CAPC, commonly cites pyrantel as a first wormer for nursing puppies, starting at about 2 weeks of age and repeating every 2 weeks, with the dam treated at the same time. The label's own schedule (below) runs along the same lines.

This describes common practice in the breeding and veterinary world. It is not advice or a recommendation for your animals.

Always ask your veterinarian before off-label use.

Directions (RFD label)

Administer 1 teaspoon (5 mL) for each 5 lb of body weight. To make sure the dose is right, weigh the animal before treatment. You do not need to withhold food before treatment. Shake well before use.

Dogs usually find this dewormer very palatable and will lick the dose from the bowl. If a dog is reluctant, mix in a small amount of dog food to encourage it.

Schedule (label): For maximum control and prevention of reinfestation, puppies should be treated at 2, 3, 4, 6, 8 and 10 weeks of age. Lactating bitches should be treated 2-3 weeks after whelping. Adult dogs kept in heavily contaminated quarters may be treated monthly to prevent T. canis reinfestation. Dogs under constant exposure should have a follow-up fecal exam within 2-4 weeks after the first treatment.

The presence of these parasites should be confirmed by a laboratory fecal exam. If your dog looks or acts sick, consult your veterinarian before treatment. Store below 30 degrees C (86 degrees F). Keep out of reach of children.
