A disposable underpad is a quilted absorbent sheet with a waterproof backing. These are blue, leak-free, 23" x 36", sold as a case of 50.
Washable pads are the right answer for most of a litter's life, but there is a stretch around the whelping itself where disposable wins outright: you want to lift the mess out and bin it, not carry it to a machine.
The whelping box, during. Between puppies you want the box clean and dry without moving the bitch. Pull the soiled pad, slide a fresh one under, done in seconds.
After a caesarean. A bitch coming round from surgery is not moving herself, and the site needs to stay clean and dry.
Under the weighing scale. Puppies get weighed daily in a well-run litter, and a pad under the scale keeps it clean without wiping between each one.
In a crate for the drive to the vet. A sick dog in a car is a problem you only solve once.
Under an incontinent or recovering dog. Age, surgery and some illnesses all produce a dog that cannot help it, and a pad means the bedding underneath stays dry.
For grooming and nail clipping. A pad on the table catches the mess, and a quicked nail - one cut short enough to bleed - drips onto something disposable rather than your table.
Both, and most breeders keep both. Disposable through whelping and for the truck. Washable for the weeks after, where the volume makes buying disposables every day a real cost.
