Clemastine Fumarate is a prescription for the treatment of allergies and atopy. It's an antihistamine used to control itching associated with allergies and is thought to have less of a sedative effect than some other antihistamines.
Uses
Clemastine Fumarate tablets are indicated for the relief of symptoms associated with allergies, such as sneezing, stuffy nose, itchiness and runny nose. Clemastine is also indicated for the relief of mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations.
Possible Side Effects
The most common adverse reaction is brief drowsiness, which occurs relatively frequently and may require discontinuation of therapy.
Drug & Food Interactions
Consult your veterinarian before using clemastine with vitamins and supplements, or other central nervous system (CNS) depressant drugs. Some of these CNS depressant drugs include barbiturates or antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) including furazolidine, selegiline (Anipryl), isoniazid and amitraz. Interactions with other medications, as well as flea and tick collars may also occur.
Precautions
Clemastine fumarate should be used with caution in those with a history of bronchial asthma, increased pressure caused by fluid inside eye, hyperthyroidism, heart disease and high blood pressure.
This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
