What Esbilac Goat's Milk is
Esbilac Goat's Milk is the goat's milk version of PetAg's Esbilac puppy milk replacer. PetAg describes it as next best to mother's milk, scientifically formulated with whole goat milk protein for puppies with sensitive digestive systems. Like regular Esbilac, it is formulated to provide a caloric pattern similar to a mother dog's milk in protein, fat and carbohydrates, with added vitamins, minerals and trace nutrients, and a special fiber blend that PetAg says is for easy digestion and improved gut health.
PetAg's labels call the powder Goat's Milk Esbilac and the newer ready-to-feed carton Esbilac Goat's Milk. Both are the same goat's milk line, and both labels abbreviate the product as GME. This page offers it as powder in a 150 g can, a 12 oz can and a 5 lb bag, and as ready-to-feed liquid in a 16 oz (473 mL) resealable carton. Puppies are fed the same amount of either form once the powder is mixed.
Goat's milk vs regular Esbilac
PetAg makes both formulas for the same puppies and gives them the same feeding rate. The difference is the milk they are built on.
| Esbilac Goat's Milk (this page) | Regular Esbilac |
| Main milk source | Goat milk: dried whole goat milk powder, plus dried goat milk protein in the powder | Cow's milk ingredients (powder lists cream and dried skimmed milk; liquid lists dried whole milk) |
| PetAg positions it for | Puppies with sensitive digestive systems | Puppies needing supplemental feeding; easy to digest |
| Mixing and feeding rate | The same: powder 1 part to 2 parts warm water; puppies get 2 tbsp (30 mL) per 4 oz of body weight daily, every 3 to 4 hours |
| Powder guaranteed analysis | PetAg publishes the same figures for both powders: protein 33.0% min, fat 40.0% min, 130,000 CFU probiotics per gram, 5,098 kcal/kg |
| 16 oz liquid | Fat 5.00% min, moisture 85.00% max; 780 kcal/kg (11.94 kcal/tbsp) | Fat 3.50% min, moisture 86.00% max; 710 kcal/kg (10.96 kcal/tbsp) |
| Opened liquid | Refrigerate; discard after 7 days | Refrigerate; discard after 72 hours |
| Sizes at A to Z | 150 g, 12 oz and 5 lb powder; 16 oz liquid | 12 oz and 28 oz powder, 16 oz liquid; 5 lb powder |
Why goat's milk? PetAg explains that the types and amounts of fatty acids in goat milk differ from those in cow's milk and improve the digestibility of the fat, and that goat milk is lower in lactose (milk sugar) than cow's milk, making it less likely to cause digestive upset as the puppy gets older. If a puppy is thriving on regular Esbilac, there is no need to switch. If you are choosing a formula for a puppy with a sensitive stomach, Esbilac Goat's Milk is the one PetAg designs for that. Esbilac Goat's Milk is not lactose-free or dairy-free (see the FAQs below), and a puppy with diarrhea, vomiting or poor weight gain should see a veterinarian.
Powder or liquid: which should you choose?
| Powder (150 g, 12 oz, 5 lb) | Liquid (16 oz carton) |
| Preparation | Mix 1 part powder with 2 parts warm water | Ready to feed. Shake well, then warm to room or body temperature. Do not microwave. |
| After opening | Room temperature up to 2 months, then refrigerated up to 1 more month; or frozen up to 6 months | Refrigerate. Discard after 7 days. |
| Mixed formula | Refrigerate and use within 24 hours | Not applicable; pour off each feeding and refrigerate the rest |
| Best for | Feeding for days or weeks, larger litters, lowest waste | Emergencies, travel, the first feedings, or one or two puppies |
One approach is to keep a carton of liquid on hand for the first night and switch to powder for ongoing feeding. The 150 g can is a small, low-commitment way to see how a puppy does on goat's milk formula before buying the 12 oz can or 5 lb bag.
Who Esbilac Goat's Milk is for
- Newborn to 6-week-old puppies that are orphaned, rejected or need supplemental feeding, especially puppies with sensitive digestive systems. PetAg says the powder can be fed as a complete diet for puppies up to 6 weeks old. PetAg's product page describes the liquid as a puppy formula for puppies newborn to 1 year.
- Weaned puppies and adult dogs that need extra, highly digestible nutrition, as a supplement to their normal diet.
- Pregnant and nursing mothers, as a supplement to a normal diet.
Esbilac Goat's Milk is formulated for dogs. PetAg says its formulas are species-specific and not interchangeable, so it is not a substitute for a kitten formula such as KMR kitten milk replacer. It is not for human consumption.
How to mix Esbilac Goat's Milk powder
- Measure 1 part powder and 2 parts warm water.
- Whisk or shake until the powder is completely dissolved with no clumps. PetAg recommends a shaker bottle; a bowl and whisk also work. Do not use a blender.
- Mix no more than the puppies will drink in 24 hours.
- Warm the formula to room or body temperature before feeding.
- Keep mixed formula in the refrigerator and use it within 24 hours.
How much and how often to feed
For newborn to 6-week-old puppies, feed 2 tablespoons (30 mL) of formula per 4 oz of body weight each day. That applies to mixed powder and to the ready-to-feed liquid. Divide the daily amount into equal portions and feed every 3 to 4 hours. Weigh puppies daily to make sure they are growing, and adjust as needed; individual puppies' needs vary.
Feeding chart: mixed powder or liquid
| Puppy weight | Total formula per day | Per feeding, every 4 hours (6 feedings) | Per feeding, every 3 hours (8 feedings) |
| 4 oz | 2 tbsp (30 mL) | 5 mL (1 teaspoon) | 3.75 mL (¾ teaspoon) |
| 8 oz | 4 tbsp (60 mL) | 10 mL (2 teaspoons) | 7.5 mL (1½ teaspoons) |
| 12 oz | 6 tbsp (90 mL) | 15 mL (3 teaspoons) | 11.25 mL (2¼ teaspoons) |
| 16 oz (1 lb) | 8 tbsp (120 mL) | 20 mL (4 teaspoons) | 15 mL (3 teaspoons) |
| 24 oz (1.5 lb) | 12 tbsp (180 mL) | 30 mL (6 teaspoons) | 22.5 mL (4½ teaspoons) |
| 32 oz (2 lb) | 16 tbsp (240 mL) | 40 mL (8 teaspoons) | 30 mL (6 teaspoons) |
Figures are calculated from PetAg's label rate and rounded; teaspoon amounts are approximate (1 teaspoon = 5 mL). PetAg recommends a nurser bottle for liquid feeding. We carry PetAg 2 oz nursing bottles, PetAg 4 oz nursing bottles and the Original Miracle Nipple.
Powder: mixing a day's formula
Add up the daily amounts for every puppy you are feeding, then mix that much formula at 1 part powder to 2 parts warm water. For example, a litter of 6 puppies at 8 oz each needs 24 tablespoons (360 mL, about 1½ cups) of mixed formula per day. Refrigerate the batch, pour off each feeding as you go and use it within 24 hours.
Liquid: how long one 16 oz carton lasts
| Puppy weight (one puppy) | Liquid per day | One 16 oz (473 mL) carton |
| 4 oz | 30 mL | About 16 days of formula, but discard the opened carton after 7 days |
| 8 oz | 60 mL | About 8 days of formula, but discard the opened carton after 7 days |
| 12 oz | 90 mL | About 5.3 days |
| 16 oz (1 lb) | 120 mL | About 3.9 days |
| 24 oz (1.5 lb) | 180 mL | About 2.6 days |
| 32 oz (2 lb) | 240 mL | About 2 days |
Once opened, the carton must be refrigerated and discarded after 7 days, whether or not it is empty. For a litter, multiply the daily amount by the number of puppies; several puppies will go through a carton in a day or two.
Supplement amounts for older dogs
| Dog | Powder (daily, top-dressed on food) | Liquid (daily, in addition to food) |
| Pregnant and nursing mothers | 2 teaspoons (4 g) per 5 lb of body weight | 2 tablespoons (30 mL) per 5 lb of body weight |
| Weaned puppies and adult dogs | 1 teaspoon (2 g) per 5 lb of body weight | 1 tablespoon (15 mL) per 5 lb of body weight |
PetAg notes that its goat's milk formulas are made primarily for puppies before weaning and that excessive amounts fed to adults may cause digestive upset because of the lactose content. Stick to the label amounts.
Storage
- Unopened cans, bags and cartons: store in a cool, dry place and use before the best-by date stamped on the container.
- Opened powder: keep at room temperature for up to 2 months, then refrigerate for up to 1 more month. You can also freeze opened powder for up to 6 months to preserve freshness. The 5 lb bag has a "date opened" box on the back to help you keep track.
- Mixed powder: refrigerate and use within 24 hours.
- Opened liquid: refrigerate the resealed carton and discard it after 7 days. Do not freeze it in the original carton.
- Do not feed any milk replacer past its expiration date.
Nutrition (powder: 150 g, 12 oz and 5 lb)
PetAg states that Goat's Milk Esbilac powder meets the AAFCO dog nutrient profiles for complete and balanced nutrition and contains prebiotics (fructooligosaccharide) and probiotics: Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus fermentum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus plantarum, Enterococcus faecium, Bifidobacterium bifidum and Pediococcus acidilactici. PetAg publishes one set of directions, guaranteed analysis and ingredients for all three powder sizes.
| Guaranteed analysis (powder) | Amount |
| Crude protein, min | 33.0% |
| Crude fat, min | 40.0% |
| Crude fiber, max | 0.5% |
| Moisture, max | 5.0% |
| Probiotics | 130,000 CFU per gram of powder |
| Calories (ME, calculated) | 5,098 kcal/kg; 31.6 kcal per tablespoon of powder; 13.2 kcal per tablespoon reconstituted 1:2 |
Nutrition (16 oz liquid)
PetAg states that Esbilac Goat's Milk Liquid is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs (70 lb or more as an adult). It contains fructooligosaccharides (prebiotic fiber) and marine microalgae oil as a source of EPA and DHA. The carton is a Tetra Pak package that PetAg says is filled using an aseptic process.
| Guaranteed analysis (liquid) | Amount |
| Crude protein, min | 5.00% |
| Crude fat, min | 5.00% |
| Crude fiber, max | 0.80% |
| Moisture, max | 85.00% |
| Vitamin E, min | 10 IU/kg |
| EPA + DHA, min | 0.01% |
| Calories (ME, calculated) | 780 kcal/kg; 11.94 kcal per tablespoon |
The liquid's guaranteed analysis looks much lower in protein and fat than the powder's because the liquid is mostly water. PetAg explains that once the powder is mixed with water, the fat and protein levels should be similar to those on the ready-to-feed liquid label.

Frequently asked questions
Goat's milk vs regular Esbilac: which should I use?
Both are complete puppy milk replacers from PetAg with the same mixing and feeding directions. Esbilac Goat's Milk is made with whole goat milk protein for puppies with sensitive digestive systems; PetAg says the fatty acids in goat milk improve fat digestibility and that goat milk is lower in lactose than cow's milk. If a puppy is doing well on regular Esbilac, stay with it. If you want a formula made for sensitive stomachs, choose goat's milk. Ask your veterinarian about any puppy with ongoing diarrhea or poor weight gain.
Is Goat's Milk Esbilac the same product as Esbilac Goat's Milk?
Yes, it is the same PetAg goat's milk line. PetAg labels the powder Goat's Milk Esbilac and the newer 16 oz ready-to-feed carton Esbilac Goat's Milk, and both labels abbreviate it GME.
Is the 150 g can the same formula as the 12 oz can and 5 lb bag?
PetAg lists 150 g, 12 oz and 5 lb as sizes of the same Goat's Milk Esbilac powder, with one set of directions, guaranteed analysis and ingredients. Only the amount differs. Packaging artwork can vary between production runs.
How do I mix Goat's Milk Esbilac powder?
Whisk or shake 1 part powder into 2 parts warm water until there are no clumps. Do not use a blender, and do not mix more than the puppies will drink in 24 hours.
How much Esbilac Goat's Milk should I feed a puppy, and how often?
2 tablespoons (30 mL) of mixed powder or liquid per 4 oz of body weight per day, divided into equal feedings every 3 to 4 hours. For example, an 8 oz puppy needs 4 tablespoons over 24 hours. Weigh the puppy daily and adjust.
How long does opened powder last?
Up to 2 months at room temperature, then up to 1 more month in the refrigerator. Opened powder can also be frozen for up to 6 months. Never use it past the best-by date.
How long does the opened 16 oz liquid last?
Refrigerate it after opening and discard it after 7 days. Do not freeze it in the original carton. That is longer than the 72 hours PetAg gives for regular Esbilac liquid, so check which carton you have.
How long can mixed powder formula be kept?
Keep reconstituted powder in the refrigerator and use it within 24 hours. Warm it to room or body temperature before feeding.
Is Esbilac Goat's Milk lactose-free or dairy-free?
No. It is a milk-based formula. PetAg says goat milk is lower in lactose than cow's milk, but the formula still contains lactose. Both forms list casein, and the powder lists whey protein concentrate, without naming the animal source, and PetAg does not describe the product as free of cow's milk. If a puppy has a diagnosed milk allergy, check with your veterinarian first.
Can I feed raw goat's milk instead?
PetAg advises against it. Raw goat milk is made for goat kids, and PetAg says it has too little protein, fat and calories per serving for puppies and, because it is not pasteurized, a higher risk of spoiling. PetAg's goat's milk formulas are commercially sterilized and formulated to contain nutrient levels like those in a mother's milk.
Does Esbilac Goat's Milk contain colostrum?
No. PetAg recommends that puppies receive colostrum by nursing from their mother for at least the first 2 days if possible, and notes that colostrum is species-specific.
Can I give it to adult or pregnant dogs?
Yes, as a supplement at label amounts. With powder, top-dress 1 teaspoon per 5 lb of body weight daily for weaned puppies and adult dogs, or 2 teaspoons per 5 lb for pregnant and nursing mothers. With the liquid, give 1 tablespoon (15 mL) or 2 tablespoons (30 mL) per 5 lb daily, in addition to their normal diet. PetAg cautions that excessive amounts fed to adults may cause digestive upset because of the lactose content.
Can I feed Esbilac Goat's Milk to kittens?
No. PetAg says its formulas are made for the nutritional needs of each species and are not interchangeable. Use a kitten milk replacer for kittens.
How many calories are in Esbilac Goat's Milk?
PetAg lists the powder at 5,098 kcal/kg, which is 31.6 kcal per tablespoon of powder or 13.2 kcal per tablespoon after mixing 1:2 with water. The 16 oz ready-to-feed liquid is 780 kcal/kg, or 11.94 kcal per tablespoon.
Is Esbilac Goat's Milk complete and balanced?
PetAg states that the powder meets the AAFCO dog nutrient profiles for complete and balanced nutrition and can be the complete diet for puppies up to 6 weeks old. The liquid is formulated to meet the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for All Life Stages, including growth of large size dogs.
Which size should I buy?
To try goat's milk formula or feed one puppy briefly, the 150 g can or the 16 oz liquid. For hand-raising a litter, the 12 oz can. For breeders and rescues feeding several litters, the 5 lb bag. Regular Esbilac also comes in a 28 oz can.
