Because of the schedule. A neonate - a newborn, in the first weeks of life - feeds every two to four hours around the clock. With one bottle you are washing and sterilising between every puppy at three in the morning. With several you make up the feeds, work down the litter, and wash them all at once.
It also matters if one puppy is sick. Giving that puppy its own bottle keeps whatever it has from going round the rest of the litter on a shared teat.
Hand-rearing an orphan litter. The obvious job.
Supplementing a litter too big for the bitch. A bitch with more puppies than teats, or not enough milk for the number she has, does most of the feeding herself while you top up the ones losing ground.
Feeding the runt. "Runt" is the smallest of a litter, usually the one pushed off the best teats. A few supplementary bottle feeds a day is often the whole difference.
Keeping a puppy going after a caesarean. A bitch under anaesthetic is not feeding anyone for several hours.
Kittens, lambs, goat kids and other small neonates. A 4 oz bottle is not dog-specific.
Milk replacer, obviously. A Miracle Nipple for any puppy too weak to pull on a standard teat, or too small for one. And a feeding tube for the puppy that has stopped sucking altogether - a bottle only works while the puppy can still do the work.
Sterilise between feeds and between litters.
One Pet-Ag 4 oz nursing bottle.
