Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) is a protein produced when liver cells grow and divide to produce new cells. AFP is usually high in unborn puppies. After the puppies are born, AFP levels drop, and healthy puppies and non-pregnant adult dogs have very little alpha-fetoprotein in their blood.
Alpha-fetoprotein is closely related to the occurrence and development of liver cancer and a variety of tumors. When liver cells become cancerous, the content of AFP in serum will increase sharply with the deterioration of the disease. Therefore, alpha-fetoprotein has become a specific clinical index for the diagnosis of primary liver cancer. At present, it is mainly used as a serum marker of primary liver cancer in clinical practice for auxiliary diagnosis and therapeutic monitoring of liver cancer in dogs.
