Uses

Minocycline is a tetracycline family drug that may be useful for treating various bacterial infections, particularly when doxycycline is unavailable. It can be effective against some doxycycline-resistant staphylococci. Minocycline is not a good choice for urinary tract infections.

Possible Side Effects

The most common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances. Occasionally nausea and/or vomiting has been observed, especially when high doses are administered. Rarely, animals may develop diarrhea or loose stools from oral minocycline. This is related to a change in the bacterial population in the animal's intestine. If diarrhea is observed, your veterinarian should be notified, and a change in medication may be indicated.

Drug & Food Interactions

This drug is contraindicated in those who have shown hypersensitivity to any of the tetracyclines or to any of the components of the product formulation. Please tell your veterinarian if your dog is on any other medication before you start using Minocycline.

Precautions

As with other antibiotic preparations, use of this drug may result in overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, including fungi. If superinfection occurs, the antibiotic should be discontinued and appropriate therapy instituted.

This drug is FDA-approved for human use. However, it is common practice for veterinarians to prescribe such drugs for use in dogs and cats.
