Why the syringe matters when hand feeding
The Miracle Brand explains that when an ordinary syringe sticks, the flow becomes uneven, and the chance of a baby animal aspirating formula becomes very high. The maker says the Miracle Oring Syringe glides easily, without sticking, and lasts for many feedings.
The maker also recommends feeding with a syringe on the nipple, rather than a bottle, at first: a syringe lets you control the flow of formula, and a bottle does not.
Luer lock or slip tip?
The 5 mL Miracle Oring Syringe comes in two styles, slip tip and luer lock. The maker is clear: only the luer lock tip fits the Miracle Nipples, so do not buy the slip tip to use with them. This page is the luer lock style. A luer lock tip is threaded (a needle would screw onto it); a slip tip is smooth (a needle would push on).
Miracle Oring Syringe sizes
| Size | Styles (maker) | Maker pack |
| 3 mL | Slip tip or luer lock; both work with the Mini and Original nipples | 10 |

| 20 mL | Luer lock | 8 |
We carry the 3 mL Miracle Oring Syringes and this 5 mL luer lock pack. The maker's puppy sets come with 10 mL syringes (and a 20 mL in the Large Puppy and sample sets); see the Small Puppy Miracle Nipple, Large Puppy Miracle Nipple and Miracle Nipple Puppy Sample Set.
How to feed with the syringe
From the Miracle Brand's how-to guide:
- Choose the right size syringe. The maker recommends always starting with the smallest size syringe when you first begin.
- Fill the syringe with the amount of formula you need and attach a Miracle Nipple.
- Hold the baby slightly upright and comfortable, with its head supported.
- Gently introduce the nipple and let the baby latch on.
- Depress the plunger slowly. If the baby is suckling too hard and getting formula too fast, hold the plunger back.
Your veterinarian or the formula label tells you how much to feed. Popular formulas include Esbilac puppy milk replacer and KMR kitten milk replacer.
Cleaning and care
- Clean the syringe in warm soapy water, rinse it well and let it air dry.
- The maker says the syringes are autoclavable.
- The maker notes that the printed measurement ink is non-toxic and washes off with repeated use. Many people cover the markings with clear adhesive tape or clear nail polish to make them last.
