What NeoPar is

NeoPar is a modified live virus vaccine against canine parvovirus, made by NeoTech, LLC in Dresden, Tennessee. It contains only one antigen: parvovirus. It is not a 5-way or 7-way combination, so you can schedule parvo protection on its own rather than tie it to a combination shot.

NeoTech describes canine parvovirus as “the most lethal and prevalent viral disease of dogs.” For anyone raising litters, managing a kennel or taking in shelter puppies, parvo is the disease that can move through a whole group at once. That is why many operations want a dedicated parvo vaccine on the shelf.

Why breeders, kennels and shelters use a single-antigen parvo vaccine

NeoTech states the following about NeoPar on its official product page:

  • High antigen mass. NeoPar “contains a High Antigen Mass (more vaccine units per dose),” which NeoTech says gives a short period from vaccination to protection, a higher level of protection and a long duration of immunity.
  • Works with maternal antibody present. NeoTech states NeoPar “stimulates antibody production in the presence of existing maternal antibodies.”
  • Antibody response after the first dose. According to NeoTech, “antibody production begins after the first dose.”
  • No extra antigens. NeoTech positions NeoPar as a way to avoid using complex combination adult vaccines (commonly called 5-way vaccines) in the young puppy.
  • Safety. NeoTech reports NeoPar was “found to be safe for use in young puppies.”

Those are the manufacturer's statements. The label directions below are what we follow and what you should follow.

NeoTech's early-age antibody study

For years, the objection to vaccinating very young puppies was that no one could show an antibody response that early, especially with maternal antibody still present. NeoTech tested it. In an internal NeoTech study, 52 puppies between 18 and 21 days of age each received a single 1 mL dose of NeoPar. Ninety percent showed a positive vaccine-induced canine parvovirus antibody response after that one dose, across maternal antibody titers ranging from 32 to 3,162. That range runs from puppies with almost no maternal protection to puppies carrying very high levels of it.

What the study shows: a measurable antibody response can be produced at that age, and it can be produced in the presence of maternal antibody. That is the reason NeoPar's high antigen mass matters for litters. Timing your own program is still a label and veterinary decision: the NeoPar label calls for the initial dose at or about 42 days of age, with revaccination every 14 to 21 days until 18 weeks.

Does vaccinating weekly cause “immune confusion”?

Commercial kennels that place puppies at 8 weeks often can't keep a 2 to 3 week gap between every vaccine, and some people claim that vaccinating more often leaves a puppy unprotected. NeoTech checked. Twenty commercial-kennel puppies followed a weekly schedule that alternated NeoPar (at 35 and 49 days) with NeoVac DA2 (at 42 and 56 days), along with a routine parasite control program. Blood was drawn at about 8½ weeks and tested for canine parvovirus antibody by serum neutralization.

A parvovirus titer of 80 is recognized in the scientific literature as protective against viral challenge. All 20 puppies were above that level, with titers from 100 to more than 5.6 million. Eight of the 20 had titers of 100,000 or more, at least 1,250 times the protective level. NeoTech's conclusion: its weekly schedule alternating NeoPar and NeoVac DA2 induces a robust level of protection in 8-week-old puppies.

Who NeoPar is for, and who should not get it

NeoPar is labeled for healthy dogs, starting with puppies at or about 42 days (6 weeks) of age, and for dogs over 18 weeks that need a single dose. Typical buyers are breeders vaccinating litters, kennels keeping adult dogs current, and shelters and rescues vaccinating new intakes.

Per the label, do not vaccinate:

  • Pregnant bitches
  • Sick dogs
  • Debilitated dogs

NeoPar is for use in dogs only. It is not labeled for cats or any other species.

How to give NeoPar (label directions)

  1. Shake well before using.
  2. Aseptically inject 1 mL subcutaneously (SC) or intramuscularly (IM) into a healthy dog.
  3. Give the first dose at or about 42 days of age.
  4. Maternal antibody can interfere with the immune response to the first vaccination, so revaccinate every 14 to 21 days until the dog is 18 weeks of age.
  5. Dogs over 18 weeks of age should receive a single 1 mL dose.
  6. Revaccinate annually with one dose.

Use the entire contents of a vial when first opened. For a 10-dose vial, that means planning to vaccinate ten dogs in one session. If you vaccinate fewer dogs at a time, single-dose vials avoid waste.

Your veterinarian can help you build a vaccination program that fits your animals. If anything on this page differs from the label on the vial you receive, follow the label.

Storage and handling

  • Store between 2° and 7°C (35° and 45°F), which is standard refrigerator temperature.
  • Do not freeze.
  • Shake well before using.
  • Use entire contents when first opened.
  • Burn the container and all unused contents.

Pack sizes

6 × single-dose vials6 vials, 1 mL eachA small litter
25 × single-dose vials25 vials, 1 mL eachKennels that vaccinate a few dogs at a time

A 10-dose vial costs less per dose than single-dose vials. Because the label says to use the whole vial once it is opened, pick the format that matches how many dogs you vaccinate at one time. Current prices for every option are shown above.

The label calls for clean technique, so you will need a needle and syringe for each dog. See our syringe and needle combos.

Frequently asked questions

What does NeoPar protect against?

Canine parvovirus only. NeoPar is a single-antigen modified live parvovirus vaccine. It does not cover distemper or adenovirus. NeoTech makes those in a separate vaccine, NeoVac DA2.

How old does a puppy have to be for NeoPar?

The label says to give the first dose at or about 42 days of age (about 6 weeks).

How many doses does a puppy need?

After the first dose, the label says to revaccinate every 14 to 21 days until the puppy is 18 weeks old, then once a year.

Does NeoPar work when a puppy still has maternal antibodies?

NeoTech states NeoPar stimulates antibody production in the presence of maternal antibodies. In an internal NeoTech study, 90% of 52 puppies aged 18 to 21 days showed a positive parvovirus antibody response after a single 1 mL dose, across maternal antibody titers from 32 to 3,162. Follow the label schedule for your own vaccination program.

Can I alternate NeoPar and NeoVac DA2 weekly?

In a NeoTech serological study, 20 commercial-kennel puppies vaccinated weekly, alternating NeoPar at 35 and 49 days with NeoVac DA2 at 42 and 56 days, all had parvovirus titers above the protective level of 80 at about 8.5 weeks of age, ranging from 100 to over 5.6 million. Talk with your veterinarian about the schedule that fits your kennel.

Why does the label call for repeat doses?

The label explains that maternal antibody passed from the dam can interfere with the puppy's response to the first vaccination. Repeating the dose every 14 to 21 days until 18 weeks covers that window.

What about an adult dog with an unknown vaccine history?

The label says dogs over 18 weeks of age should receive a single 1 mL dose, then be revaccinated annually with one dose.

Can I give NeoPar to a pregnant dog?

No. The label says not to vaccinate pregnant bitches, sick dogs or debilitated dogs.

Can I use NeoPar in cats?

No. NeoPar is labeled for use in dogs only.

How should NeoPar be stored?

In the refrigerator, between 2° and 7°C (35° and 45°F). Do not freeze it. Shake well before use.

Can I save part of a 10-dose vial for later?

No. The label says to use the entire contents when first opened. If you are vaccinating fewer than ten dogs at once, choose single-dose vials.

What preservatives does NeoPar contain?

The label lists gentamicin and amphotericin B as preservatives.

What if a dog has a reaction?

The label states that in case of anaphylaxis, epinephrine, corticosteroids and antihistamines may be indicated depending on the nature and severity of the reaction. Contact your veterinarian right away if you see signs of a reaction.
