What NeoVac DA2 is

NeoVac DA2 is a two-way modified live vaccine for dogs, made by NeoTech, LLC in Dresden, Tennessee. The USDA lists it under the true name “Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2 Vaccine, Modified Live Virus.” It contains canine distemper virus and canine adenovirus type 2. The label indication is an aid in the prevention of disease caused by canine distemper virus and by canine adenovirus type 1, the virus behind infectious canine hepatitis.

It does not contain parvovirus, parainfluenza or leptospirosis. That is on purpose. NeoTech built its puppy program around two simple vaccines: NeoVac DA2 for distemper and adenovirus, and NeoPar for parvovirus. Breeders and kennels that use both can schedule each disease separately instead of tying everything to one 5-way shot.

What NeoTech says about NeoVac DA2

NeoTech states the following on its official NeoVac DA2 product page:

  • High antigen mass. NeoTech says the vaccine has a high antigen mass, which it links to a short time from vaccination to protection, a higher level of protection and a long duration of immunity.
  • Works with maternal antibody present. According to NeoTech, NeoVac DA2 stimulates antibody production in the presence of maternal antibodies.
  • Response after the first dose. NeoTech states that antibody production begins after the first dose, and that other DA2 vaccines require 2 or 3 doses to start an initial antibody response.
  • No distemper shedding. NeoTech reports no post-vaccination shedding of canine distemper virus.
  • Simple combination. NeoTech says a two-antigen vaccine is less likely to cause a vaccine reaction than complex combination vaccines.

Those are the manufacturer's statements. The label directions below are what we follow and what you should follow.

NeoTech's weekly-vaccination kennel study

Commercial kennels that place puppies at 8 weeks often can't keep a 2 to 3 week gap between every vaccine. Some people worry that vaccinating that often leaves a puppy unprotected. NeoTech tested its own weekly program in 20 commercial-kennel puppies. The puppies alternated NeoPar and NeoVac DA2 one week apart, alongside a routine intestinal parasite control program and a kennel cough vaccine at 28 days of age.

Puppy ageVaccine in the study
35 daysNeoPar (parvovirus)
42 daysNeoVac DA2 (distemper-adenovirus)
49 daysNeoPar
56 daysNeoVac DA2

Blood was drawn at about 8½ weeks of age and tested for canine parvovirus antibody by serum neutralization. A parvovirus titer of 80 is recognized in the scientific literature as protective against viral challenge. All 20 puppies were above that level, with titers from 100 to more than 5.6 million, and 8 of the 20 had titers of 100,000 or more. NeoTech concluded that its weekly schedule alternating NeoPar and NeoVac DA2 induces a robust level of protection in 8-week-old puppies.

What this study does and does not show for NeoVac DA2: it measured parvovirus antibody only. No distemper or adenovirus titers were reported. So it shows that puppies receiving NeoVac DA2 in the weeks between their NeoPar doses still developed parvovirus titers above the protective level. It does not, by itself, measure distemper or adenovirus protection. Note too that the study's first NeoPar dose at 35 days is earlier than the NeoPar label, which calls for the first dose at or about 42 days. The NeoVac DA2 doses at 42 and 56 days fit its label: first dose at 42 days or older, repeated every 14 to 28 days. Talk with your veterinarian about the schedule that fits your kennel.

Who NeoVac DA2 is for, and who should not get it

NeoVac DA2 is labeled for dogs, starting with puppies at least 42 days (6 weeks) old, and for dogs over 16 weeks that need a single dose. Typical buyers are breeders vaccinating litters, kennels keeping adult dogs current, and shelters and rescues vaccinating new intakes.

Per the label, do not vaccinate:

  • Pregnant bitches
  • Lactating (nursing) bitches
  • Sick dogs
  • Debilitated dogs

The label also notes that transient corneal opacity (a temporary cloudy eye) may occasionally occur after vaccination. NeoVac DA2 is a canine vaccine. For ferrets, NeoTech makes a separate distemper vaccine, NeoVac FD. For a distemper-only canine vaccine, see NeoVac D.

How to give NeoVac DA2 (label directions)

  1. Aseptically rehydrate the vaccine with the diluent supplied. Shake well during rehydration.
  2. Inject 1 dose (1 mL) subcutaneously.
  3. Give the first dose to dogs at least 42 days of age.
  4. Maternal antibody can interfere with the immune response to the first vaccination, so revaccinate every 14 to 28 days until the dog is 16 weeks of age.
  5. Dogs over 16 weeks of age should receive a single 1 mL dose.
  6. Revaccinate annually with one dose.

Rehydrate only what you plan to use. The label says to burn the container and all unused contents. If you vaccinate a few dogs at a time, single-dose vials avoid waste.

Your veterinarian can help you build a vaccination program that fits your animals. If anything on this page differs from the label on the product you receive, follow the label.

Storage and handling

  • Store between 2° and 7°C (35° and 45°F), which is standard refrigerator temperature.
  • Shake well during rehydration.
  • Gentamicin is used as a preservative.
  • Burn the container and all unused contents.
  • For animal use only.

Frequently asked questions

What does NeoVac DA2 protect against?

The label indication is an aid in the prevention of disease due to canine distemper virus and canine adenovirus type 1 (infectious canine hepatitis virus). The vaccine contains canine distemper virus and canine adenovirus type 2.

Does NeoVac DA2 include parvovirus?

No. NeoVac DA2 covers distemper and adenovirus only. NeoTech makes parvovirus protection as a separate single-antigen vaccine, NeoPar.

How old does a puppy have to be for NeoVac DA2?

The label says to vaccinate dogs that are at least 42 days (about 6 weeks) of age.

How many doses does a puppy need?

After the first dose, the label says to revaccinate every 14 to 28 days until the puppy is 16 weeks old, then once a year. Maternal antibody can interfere with the response to the first dose, which is why the series is repeated.

What about an adult dog with an unknown vaccine history?

The label says dogs over 16 weeks of age should receive a single 1 mL dose, then be revaccinated annually with one dose.

Is NeoVac DA2 given under the skin or in the muscle?

Under the skin. The label directions are to inject 1 mL subcutaneously.

How do I mix NeoVac DA2?

Aseptically rehydrate the vaccine with the diluent supplied and shake well during rehydration. Each dose is 1 mL. Rehydrate only what you will use; the label says to burn the container and all unused contents.

Can I alternate NeoVac DA2 and NeoPar weekly?

In a NeoTech study, 20 commercial-kennel puppies alternated NeoPar at 35 and 49 days with NeoVac DA2 at 42 and 56 days. At about 8½ weeks, all 20 had parvovirus titers above the protective level of 80. The study measured parvovirus antibody only. Talk with your veterinarian about the schedule that fits your kennel.

Did NeoTech's study measure distemper titers?

No. The weekly-vaccination study reported canine parvovirus serum-neutralization titers only. It did not report distemper or adenovirus titers.

Can I give NeoVac DA2 to a pregnant or nursing dog?

No. The label says not to vaccinate pregnant or lactating bitches, sick dogs or debilitated dogs.

What side effects are listed on the label?

The label says transient corneal opacity may occasionally occur after vaccination. In case of anaphylaxis, epinephrine, corticosteroids and antihistamines may be indicated depending on the nature and severity of the reaction. Contact your veterinarian right away if you see signs of a reaction.

Can I use NeoVac DA2 in ferrets?

NeoVac DA2 is a canine vaccine. For ferrets, NeoTech makes NeoVac FD. Ask your veterinarian which vaccine is right for your animal.

How should NeoVac DA2 be stored?

In the refrigerator, between 2° and 7°C (35° and 45°F).
