What Nobivac Intra-Trac3 is
Nobivac Intra-Trac3 is a three-way kennel cough vaccine that goes in the nose, not under the skin. It contains two modified live viruses, canine adenovirus type 2 and canine parainfluenza virus, and an avirulent live culture of Bordetella bronchiseptica. Merck describes it as protection against tracheobronchitis, or “canine cough,” part of what veterinarians call canine infectious respiratory disease complex.
Because it is given intranasally, it works where these germs get in: the lining of the nose and throat. It is often used before boarding, grooming, training, shows and other places where dogs share air.
What Merck says about Intra-Trac3
Merck Animal Health states the following on its official product page:
- Young puppies. It can be used in puppies as young as 3 weeks of age because maternal antibodies do not interfere with the localized antibody response.
- Fast onset. Protection against B. bronchiseptica begins as early as 48 hours after vaccination.
- One year against Bordetella. A 1-year duration of immunity for B. bronchiseptica. This also appears on the label.
- Mucosal response. Merck says intranasal vaccination promotes a stronger IgA response than subcutaneous vaccination, and that IgA on mucosal surfaces appears to matter more than systemic responses against respiratory pathogens.
- Challenge results. Merck reports that the vaccine eliminated Bordetella shedding in a controlled challenge 9 weeks after vaccination and significantly reduced cough scores and days of coughing.
Those are the manufacturer's statements. The label directions below are what we follow and what you should follow.
Who Nobivac Intra-Trac3 is for
The label covers healthy dogs 3 weeks of age or older. Typical buyers are breeders and kennels, boarding and grooming businesses, trainers, and owners of dogs that travel to shows or field trials.
- The vaccine has not been tested in pregnant bitches. Talk with your veterinarian before using it in a pregnant female.
- The label warns that mild canine cough may occur after vaccination.
- Do not mix it with other products, except as specified on the label.
Intra-Trac3 does not cover canine influenza. For that, see Nobivac Canine Flu H3N2. Prefer an oral Bordetella vaccine? See Nobivac Intra-Trac Oral Bb or Vanguard B Oral.
How to give Nobivac Intra-Trac3 (label directions)
Prepare the vaccine
- Rehydrate the live vaccine to the volume you want with the sterile diluent supplied.
- Draw the vaccine back into the syringe.
- Remove the needle from the syringe.
- Put the nasal applicator tip on the syringe.
Choose the dose volume
- Standard dose: 1 mL, made by rehydrating the vaccine with 1 mL of sterile diluent.
- Small dogs and puppies: 0.5 mL, made by rehydrating the same vaccine with 0.5 mL of sterile diluent. The label allows this to minimize discomfort. It is still one full dose of vaccine, in less liquid.
Give it in the nose
- Instill the rehydrated vaccine into one or both nostrils.
- Vaccinate dogs at 3 weeks of age or older.
- Historically, annual revaccination has been recommended. The label says the need for this booster has not been established; consult your veterinarian or the manufacturer about revaccination frequency.
Never inject this vaccine. The label is clear that it is designed for intranasal use only with the enclosed applicators. Systemic reactions after accidental intramuscular or subcutaneous injection have been reported, including vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, jaundice and death associated with liver failure, as well as tissue damage at the injection site. If a dose is injected by mistake, monitor the dog closely and call your veterinarian immediately. The label lists supportive therapy, including IV fluids and certain antibiotics, that a veterinarian may use, and epinephrine for an anaphylactoid reaction.
If anything on this page differs from the label on the product you receive, follow the label.

| 150 × 1 dose | 150 single-dose vaccine vials with sterile diluent and nasal applicators | Large kennels, shelters and high-volume boarding |

How we ship vaccines
From our shipping policy:
- We ship vaccines and perishable items Monday through Wednesday. Orders received by 1 pm EST go out the same day.
- Vaccines ship UPS 2nd Day Air, packed in a styrofoam vaccine shipping cooler with 3 ice packs. The cooler and 3 ice packs are included at no extra charge. Extra ice packs beyond 3 can be added for a fee.
- The ice packs will often have melted by the time the box arrives. That means the packaging did its job. The cooler and ice packs protect the vaccine from big temperature swings in transit; they are not meant to deliver it at refrigerator temperature. Put the vaccine in the refrigerator as soon as it arrives.
- Overnight shipping is available on request: note it at checkout or call 800-979-2869.
- We ship vaccines only within the United States.

Frequently asked questions
What does Nobivac Intra-Trac3 protect against?
The label says it has been shown to be effective for vaccinating healthy dogs 3 weeks of age or older against canine adenovirus type 2, canine parainfluenza virus and Bordetella bronchiseptica, agents implicated in kennel cough.
How young can a puppy get Intra-Trac3?
The label says to vaccinate dogs at 3 weeks of age or older. Merck states that maternal antibodies do not interfere with the localized antibody response, which is why it can be used that young.
How do I give it?
In the nose only. Rehydrate the vaccine with the sterile diluent, draw it into a syringe, remove the needle, attach the nasal applicator tip and instill the vaccine into one or both nostrils.
Should I use 1 mL or 0.5 mL?
The standard dose is 1 mL. The label lets you rehydrate the vaccine with 0.5 mL of diluent instead, to minimize discomfort in small dogs and puppies. Either way the dog gets the full dose of vaccine; only the amount of liquid changes.
What happens if Intra-Trac3 is injected by mistake?
The label warns that systemic reactions after accidental intramuscular or subcutaneous injection have been reported, including vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, jaundice and death associated with liver failure. If it happens, monitor the dog closely and call your veterinarian right away.
How long does protection last?
The label says duration of immunity for Bordetella bronchiseptica is at least 1 year. Duration of immunity for canine adenovirus type 2 and canine parainfluenza has not been established.
How soon does it start working?
Merck states that protection against B. bronchiseptica begins as early as 48 hours after vaccination.
Will my dog cough after vaccination?
It can happen. The label says post-vaccinal reactions consisting of mild canine cough syndrome may occur.
How often should dogs be revaccinated?
The label says annual revaccination has historically been recommended, but the need for this booster has not been established. Ask your veterinarian or Merck about revaccination frequency.
Does Intra-Trac3 protect against canine influenza?
Can I give it to a pregnant dog?
The label says this product has not been tested in pregnant bitches. Talk with your veterinarian first.
