What Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv is
Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv is Merck Animal Health's 5-way modified live vaccine for dogs. Merck calls it “a proven foundation for vaccine protocols.” One 1 mL injection covers the five core viral diseases in the name:
- D – canine distemper virus
- A – canine adenovirus type 2, with label indications for both adenovirus type 1 (infectious canine hepatitis) and adenovirus type 2 (respiratory disease)
- P – canine parainfluenza virus
- Pv – canine parvovirus
It comes as a 25-dose tray. Each dose is a vial of vaccine that you reconstitute with a vial of sterile diluent just before use. That makes it a practical choice for breeders vaccinating litters, kennels keeping adult dogs current, and shelters vaccinating on intake.
What it protects against
Per the Merck label, Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv “has been shown to be effective for vaccination of healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older against canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus type 1 (hepatitis), canine adenovirus type 2 (respiratory disease), canine parainfluenza virus and canine parvovirus.” The label also states that duration of immunity has not been established. Efficacy and safety data are published by the USDA at productdata.aphis.usda.gov.
Merck Animal Health also states the following on its product page:
- Protects against all known strains of canine parvovirus (CPV), including CPV-2c.
- High antigenic mass (titer), low-passage parvovirus vaccine containing CPV-2b, which Merck describes as one of the most prevalent field strains of parvovirus.
- “First to publish data showing protection against CPV-2c challenge” (independent study by Larson and Schultz, cited by Merck).
- “Multiple studies demonstrate the ability to override maternal antibodies.”
- The distemper fraction uses an Onderstepoort-type strain, which Merck says provides a high level of safety.
- The adenovirus type 2 fraction protects against CAV-1 and CAV-2 “without the side effects associated with modified live CAV-1 vaccines.”
The label also states that data indicate the development of corneal opacity is not associated with the use of this product.
Who it is for, and who should not get it
Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv is labeled for healthy dogs 6 weeks of age or older. Per the label warnings:
- Vaccinate only healthy, non-parasitized dogs. Deworm first if needed.
- Do not vaccinate pregnant bitches.
- Like any biological product, it may cause anaphylaxis and/or other inflammatory immune-mediated hypersensitivity reactions.
How to give Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv (label directions)
- Aseptically transfer the contents of the sterile diluent vial to the Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv vial.
- Mix gently until dissolved.
- Inject one dose (1 mL) subcutaneously or intramuscularly.
- The first dose may be given at 6 weeks of age or older.
- Repeat the dose 2 to 4 weeks later. Two doses are required for primary immunization.
Puppies and maternal antibody. The label notes that maternal antibodies are known to interfere with the development of active immunity in dogs, and that additional boosters will be required in most young animals. The age at which maternal antibody for canine parvovirus stops interfering varies with the dam's titer and how much colostral antibody the puppy absorbed.
Boosters. In Merck's words: “Historically, annual revaccination has been recommended for this product. The need for this booster has not been established. For more information on revaccination frequency, in general or in the face of maternal antibody, consult your veterinarian or the manufacturer.”

How we ship vaccines
From our shipping policy:
- We ship vaccines and perishable items Monday through Wednesday. Orders received by 1 pm EST go out the same day.
- Vaccines ship UPS 2nd Day Air, packed in a styrofoam vaccine shipping cooler with 3 ice packs. The cooler and 3 ice packs are included at no extra charge. Extra ice packs beyond 3 can be added for a fee.
- The ice packs will often have melted by the time the box arrives. That means the packaging did its job. It protects the vaccine from big temperature swings in transit; it is not meant to deliver it at refrigerator temperature. Refrigerate the vaccine as soon as it arrives.
- Overnight shipping is available on request: note it at checkout or call 800-979-2869.
- Vaccines and other perishable items cannot be returned or refunded.
Frequently asked questions
What does 1-DAPPv stand for?
D is distemper, A is adenovirus (type 2, with label indications for adenovirus type 1 hepatitis and type 2 respiratory disease), P is parainfluenza and Pv is parvovirus. It is often called a 5-way vaccine because it covers canine distemper virus, adenovirus type 1, adenovirus type 2, parainfluenza virus and parvovirus.
How young can a puppy get Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv?
The label says the first dose may be given at 6 weeks of age or older.
How many doses are needed?
The label says to repeat the dose 2 to 4 weeks after the first, and that two doses are required for primary immunization. It also notes that because maternal antibodies interfere with active immunity, additional boosters will be required in most young animals. Ask your veterinarian how many to give.

Merck's label says annual revaccination has historically been recommended, but the need for that booster has not been established. Consult your veterinarian or Merck Animal Health about revaccination frequency.
Does it protect against the CPV-2c parvovirus strain?
Merck Animal Health states that Nobivac Canine 1-DAPPv protects against all known strains of canine parvovirus, including CPV-2c, and cites an independent study by Larson and Schultz.
